Miami to Key West by Car: Times, Routes & What It Costs
Vimzi Limo · 7 min read
The drive from Miami to Key West is one of the most scenic road trips in the country, and also one of the most commonly underestimated. It looks short on a map. It is not a short drive. Here's what the trip actually involves: how long it takes, what route you'll be on, and what it costs depending on how you choose to make it.
How Long Does the Drive Actually Take?
Plan on roughly 3.5 hours for the approximately 160-mile drive under normal conditions, though this varies more than most Florida drives. There's exactly one road covering most of the route, so a single accident, a drawbridge opening, or heavy weekend traffic can add significant time with no way to reroute around it. Weekend afternoons and holiday weekends are consistently the slowest. If your schedule has any flexibility, a weekday morning departure is the most reliable option.
The Route: US-1 and the Overseas Highway
The entire drive runs along US-1, known for most of its length as the Overseas Highway, a series of 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge. It's genuinely one of the most photographed stretches of road in the state, open water visible on both sides for long sections.
Along the way, the route passes through:
- Key Largo, the first and northernmost Key, known for diving and snorkeling access to the reef.
- Islamorada, a stretch of several small islands known as the sport fishing capital of the world.
- Marathon, roughly the midpoint of the drive, home to the Dolphin Research Center and Sombrero Beach.
- Bahia Honda, frequently ranked among the best beaches in Florida, right off the highway.
- Big Pine Key, home to the National Key Deer Refuge, worth a slow-down even if you don't stop.
Each of these makes a reasonable stop if you're not racing the clock. If you are trying to make good time, the drive works fine straight through, but it's worth knowing what you're passing.
What It Costs to Drive Yourself
Driving yourself has its own real costs that are easy to underestimate:
- Fuel for a roughly 320-mile round trip, plus whatever driving you do once you're in Key West.
- Rental car costs if you flew into Miami, often with a one-way drop fee if you're not returning to the same location.
- Parking in Key West, which is notoriously limited and expensive near Duval Street and the historic district, often an unexpected cost on top of the trip itself.
- The actual cost of your time. Seven hours of round-trip driving is seven hours not spent doing anything else on a trip that's presumably about relaxing.
The Alternative: A Private Car for the Whole Trip
A private car service handles the drive itself, not just the destination. One vehicle, one chauffeur, a flat rate confirmed before you leave, and no parking to find once you arrive, since you're dropped directly at your hotel or address.
Our Miami to Key West transportation service covers the full route in a Cadillac Escalade, with stops in Key Largo, Islamorada, or Marathon available on request if you want to break up the drive rather than power through it. Round trips, one-way trips, and same-day round trips are all available depending on your schedule.
Which Option Actually Makes Sense?
Driving yourself makes sense if you want full control over your stops and timing, and don't mind the return drive. A private car makes more sense if you'd rather arrive already relaxed instead of having spent the first afternoon of your trip behind the wheel, or if you're flying into Miami and don't want to deal with a rental car at all. For groups, splitting a private vehicle often works out comparably to individual rental costs, without anyone having to be the designated driver for a 3.5-hour trip each way.
However you make the trip, the Overseas Highway is worth experiencing slowly at least once. Whether that means pulling over at Bahia Honda yourself or watching it go by from the back seat is really just a question of what kind of trip you're looking for.
