Miami to Key West by Car: Times, Routes & What It Costs

The drive from Miami to Key West is one of the most scenic road trips in the country, and also one of the most commonly underestimated. It looks short on a map. It is not a short drive. How Long Does the Drive Actually Take?

Plan on roughly 3.5 hours for the approximately 160-mile drive under normal conditions, though this varies more than most Florida drives. There's exactly one road covering most of the route, so a single accident, a drawbridge opening, or heavy weekend traffic can add significant time with no way to reroute around it. Weekend afternoons and holiday weekends are consistently the slowest. If your schedule has any flexibility, a weekday morning departure is the most reliable option.

The Route: US-1 and the Overseas Highway

The entire drive runs along US-1, known for most of its length as the Overseas Highway, a series of 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge. It's genuinely one of the most photographed stretches of road in the state, open water visible on both sides for long sections.
